Detroit businessman Dr. William (Bill) Pickard recently hosted a reception and dinner that some would consider a kind of think tank with the ultimate goal of establishing relationships and partnerships between the Detroit community and one of the nation’s oldest Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Alabama State University, located in Montgomery, Ala.

Pickard is the founder, chairman and chief executive of Global Automotive Alliance, one of the country’s leading minority-owned businesses.   He is widely known for his innovative approach to business development, and he is poised to bring his wealth of knowledge and experience to ASU. One of his major endeavors for ASU is the establishment of the Entrepreneurial
    Center for Innovation and Change.

“Entrepreneurship is surfacing as one of the critical success factors not only in the recovery of our nation’s economy but also as an essential element in our continued prosperity,” Pickard wrote in his personal invitations to those who were asked to be involved in the Detroit event.

The Downtown Athletic Club in Detroit was the site of the reception, which was held in conjunction with ASU’s National Alumni Association meeting. The event was one of the initial steps in the development of the Entrepreneurial Center. The organizers’ goal was to engage Detroit businessmen and community leaders in the proposed Entrepreneurial Center at ASU.

Pickard explained in his letter that the Michigan site was 322an ideal location for the historic meeting.

“As one of the regions with the highest number of ASU alumni, the Detroit-Alabama connect is strong,” wrote Pickard. “Through endeavors like this meeting, we have the opportunity to collaborate and strengthen our capacity to establish entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial thinking as core leadership competencies for the 21st century.”

The Detroit partnership has a number of benefits for Alabama State University, including establishing venues for student recruitment and student internship opportunities.
An additional goal is the fostering of consulting and development opportunities.
