Burress was once flying high as a top wide receiver for the New York Giants, earning a reported $25 million on a six-year contract.  Suddenly, a career that was soaring high went south quite dramatically, when the Totowa, N.J., police responded to a domestic violence disturbance[3] at Plaxico’s home involving his wife, Tiffany, in August and September of 2008. Each incident resulted in a temporary restraining order that was eventually dismissed by the courts.

The 6’5″ player was not arrested in either case.

Just two months after the last domestic violence case, Burress suffered an accidental injury[4]at his own hands: The 35-year-old player was at a New York City nightclub, when a unholstered pistol that had been tucked inside his sweatpants’ waistband began sliding down his leg.

As he reached for the handgun, it dislodged, shooting him in the right thigh.  Luckily, Burress was not seriously injured and no one else was hurt.  The incident, though, had a detrimental effect on his football career.

    Watch Burress’ gun fiasco here:

Since Burress failed to obtain a New York City license to carry the gun, he was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree and eventually sentenced to a 3 1/2 year prison term. On August 20, 2009, Burress accepted a plea deal that would put him in prison for two years with an additional two years of supervised release.

While Burress played for the New York Jets last season after being released from prison, he has been having a difficult time finding a team that will give him a steady gig.  Now Burress is an unrestricted free agent, which will obviously make it difficult for him to pay off his federal tab.
