U-M Expert Says Candidates Have To Be Careful In Tonight’s Debate

ANN ARBOR (WWJ) What will America be “buzzing about” the morning after Wednesday’s presidential debate? Will there be a Ronald Reagan “there you go again” moment?

Aaron Kall, director of the U-M Debate Program and Debate Institute, said it doesn’t matter what the candidates say as much as how they say it — because debates are often “style over substance.”

“It’s a gaffe, it’s a finger, it’s a candidate that may blink the most, it’s the nonverbal signal that people may be talking about the next morning,” Kall said.

Kall says while Mitt Romney and Barack Obama may be armed with lots of zingers — think “You sir, are no Jack Kennedy” — they need to proceed with caution.

“There’s an upside for having an important moment like this that receives a lot of attention, but it does have an opportunity to backfire as well, they do need to pick their spots in the 90 minute debate very carefully,” Kall said.
