Thursday, standing with Detroit clergy, labor leaders and other supporters, Congressman John J. Conyers, Jr. (D-Detroit) officially announced his endorsement of Benny N. Napoleon for Mayor of the city of Detroit.

“I strongly believe that Detroit citizens’ right to democracy has been challenged, which is a view both Benny Napoleon and I share,” said Conyers who represents the 13th Congressional District. “I am concerned about continued disinvestment in urban centers across America, especially in my hometown of Detroit.”

Congressman Conyers is the second-longest serving member in the United States Congress.

“As a lifelong Detroit resident, I have seen the rising crime and focus taken away from the city’s real core – its neighborhoods where most residents live. Benny’s Neighborhood Growth Strategy, coupled with his Five-Point 50-Percent Crime Reduction Plan, will affirm Detroit as a safe city; stabilize and revitalize the neighborhoods; develop economic anchors to create jobs, shopping and dining opportunities; build six neighborhood public safety service centers and nine Fire & EMS superstations; and initiate other necessary resources.”

Napoleon holds Congressman Conyers in high regard for his service to this nation.

“Congressman Conyer’s record of service illustrates that he has an urban focus,” said Napoleon. “We need leaders to advocate for neighborhoods at every level of government, and as we move through implementing Detroit’s Neighborhood Growth Strategy, the congressman’s partnership will be very beneficial in securing federal resources.”
