Janelle Monae found a way to bounce back this week, after she was reportedly cut off for speaking about police brutality during her TODAY Show performance on Friday.

She simply continued to speak her mind.

The singer took to the streets of Chicago hand-in-hand with Geneva Reed-Veal, the mother of Sandra Bland, on Monday afternoon. During her “Eephus Tour,” Monae launched rallies and marches with several groups from cities in New York, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C., in order to protest against police brutality.

Fans of the “Yoga” singer noticed her message to the TODAY Show audience on Friday morning was cut short right before she addressed the Black Lives Movement after her performance of the new protest-inspired single, “Hell YouTalmbout.” Janelle has become the latest artist to have her message debatably ignored in the public eye.

While bosses in Hollywood and music might prefer their artists stay in their “lanes,” activists have long urged celebs to use their platform to speak on certain issues. But choosing to follow your heart can be a Catch-22, as many artists are shunned, criticized, and in some cases ignored for going political.

From Kanye West to Nina Simone, here are some other famous celebrities who were nearly blacklisted for their political, social, and religious beliefs.
