Who we are…

Alkebulan Village, Inc. is dedicated to serving the youth and strengthening families using the 3M’s philosophy (Mental, Moral and Martial) meaning the organization teaches self-respect, self-control and self-discipline to the youth it serves.  The mission is to build healthy minds, bodies and communities one brick, one building, one block at a time.

Quicken Loans has been moved by Alkebu-lan Village’s important community work so much that they committed to being the leading sponsor contributing $150,000 toward the 35th Anniversary “Lend a Hand” campaign.  Quicken further pledged to provide additional financial support as well as other in-kind support services to facilitate the fundraising effort.  To date, Alkebu-lan Village, Inc. has raised nearly $450,000 toward the goal of $600,000.  By helping to raise the final $150,000 you will be assisting the organization in reaching the goals set forth above.Alkebu-lan Village, Inc. takes great pride in being located at Harper and Van Dyke, one of the hardest hit neighborhoods affected by the steady decline in the city of Detroit.  The help is needed where the hurt is most.  Originally, the name of the organization was Alkebu-lan Martial Arts Federation, and martial arts has been used as a tool to attract and educate the youth through the years.  The name was changed to Alkebu-lan Village, Inc. in 2000 to encompass their growth to a full service youth center with programs including martial arts, fitness, leadership training, homework assistance, tutoring, anti-bullying and many others.

2013 is a milestone year for Alkebu-lan Village marking 35 years of service to the community reaching and teaching over 250,000 youth and families in the process.  The village has embarked on an ambitious fundraising campaign entitled “Lend a Hand” with the goal being to raise $600,000 to (1) pay off the mortgage on the building, (2) make some capital improvements to the facility, and (3) cover other program expenses affected by funding cuts.  In the current non-profit environment where Detroit funds are halted due to bankruptcy, combined with the slowly recovering national economy, seeking alternative funding has become essential.

What we need…

As a matter of necessity, the primary goal of paying off the mortgage on the building had to be replaced by covering program expenses affected by funding cuts.  Planned capital improvements to the facility included a new roof, basement renovations, main floor banquet hall and skating rink resurfacing and painting, and air conditioning for the final 1/3 of the building.  The roof is repaired, the basement has been transformed into a state of the art computer lab/game room and Village Cafe, and the banquet hall and skating rink floor has been renovated.  The only capital improvement left to complete is the air conditioning for the final 1/3 of the building which includes the newly created computer lab.  Wherever we fall short in our fundraising goals for mortgage burning or capital improvements, the money will go toward covering program expenses affected by funding cuts.

Save the babies…

Once again, the city of Detroit is in the spotlight as one of the most dangerous urban areas in the country.  Now more than ever, youth development work is critical.  Alkebulan Village, Inc. has touched over 250,000 youth and families over the course of 35 years. Help us continue to make a difference in the lives of children who will grow up to be productive adults.  Collectively we have to save the babies and as the old proverb goes it take a village!
