The annual Back-to-School Rally for students entering pre-K through 12th Grade will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2014, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will be based on the campus of Oak Grove African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church in northwest Detroit, with workshops and supervised activities at nearby Christian Gospel Center Church of God in Christ (C.O.G.I.C.) and Berean Chapel of Detroit.
This free Rally is focused on academic and social preparation and welcomes all early, primary and secondary students and their parents, regardless of religious practice or affiliation. While most participants live in the neighborhoods roughly bordered by 8 Mile, 7 Mile, Wyoming and Livernois, the event is open to families from school districts throughout southeast Michigan.
Free backpacks with school supplies will be distributed to the first 450 registrants, at the conclusion of the program. Sign-in by a parent or guardian during the first hour, from 8 to 9 a.m., is required for a student to participate in the Rally.
Food, recreation and help with personal grooming will be provided in addition to the age-appropriate Back-to-School workshops. Children must attend all workshops with their age group in order to receive a free backpack.
Registration begins promptly at 8 a.m. at Oak Grove A.M.E. Church, 19801 Cherrylawn (at Pembroke), Detroit 48221. Call (313) 341-8877 for more information.
