The Dallas hospital where West African native was taken to after being diagnosed with the deadly disease Ebola has now announced that he died from complications this morning.

Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas announced in a statement that Liberian native Thomas Eric Duncan, 42, passed away from the virulent virus at 7:51 a.m.

Duncan died 18 days after arriving in Texas on his first trip to the United States. He flew in to see his son’s high school graduation and was staying with the boy’s mother in her apartment.

“Mr. Duncan succumbed to an insidious disease, Ebola,” the statement read. “He fought courageously in this battle.

“Our professionals, the doctors and nurses in the unit, as well as the entire Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas community, are also grieving his passing. We have offered the family our support and condolences at this difficult time.”

A Liberian national identified last month as the first U.S.-diagnosed case of Ebola died from the virus Wednesday morning in a Dallas hospital, officials said.
