This year we will begin picking a book series each month for mothers and daughters to read together. I have fond memories of reading books with my mother over the years. I have decided to roll out a column. It will appear once a month and be called “Mother Daughter Selections“. I have fond memories of discussing books with my mother and think this is a wonderful bonding moment. It can also be a great time to peel your youngster away from video games and the phone!
The first selection for 2015 is “The Selection Series” written by Kiera Cass. The books are available as ebooks and hardcovers.
The books are a series of dystopian/romance young adult novels by author Kiera Cass, following the journey of America Singer, a young girl who is entered in a competition referred to as The Hunger Games meets The Bachelor to be the next queen of a country called Illéa – and Prince Maxon’s wife. However, this means leaving her family and secret boyfriend behind. She is stuck between two worlds, and realizes that life as one of the thirty-five girls is not what she expected.
The books in this series read like an adventure. There are strong influences from the story of Esther in the old testament, which told in this modern tale may serve as a great mother daughter conversation alone. I would suggest that you
Why should you read it: I found it to be absolutely delightful and will be a great read for groups. There are numerous topics that you can talk about. You can discuss loyalty, humility modesty, pride, self identification, commitment, determination, virtue and kindness.
Who should read it it: It is appropriate for a sophisticated tween and above.
What to be aware of : There are light romantic moments in it. No graphic scenes. There is mild violence and innuendos but nothing to cause one to blush.
The book series consists of’:
- The Selection Book 1
- The Elite Book 2
- The One Book 3
- The Heir (due May 5, 2015) Book 4
- There is an untitled 6th book as well scheduled.
There are novellas that tie in well and tell intricate detailed back stories that you will enjoy. I suggest that you read all the books in order, then the below novellas.
The Selection was a potential television series that would have aired on The CW, but it was not picked up. Maybe, in this second wind of television shows it will see the light of day.
