In 2010, Dreamworks acquired the script to the boxing drama Southpaw with intentions on casting Eminem in the lead role. After officially backing away from the role in 2012 to focus on music, Eminem still has ties to the project; he’s just no longer slated to be in front of the camera. A new Beats by Dre commercial starring, Golden State Warriors All-Defensive First Team member Draymond Green features Eminem’s latest track, “Phenomenal.”
“We have been involved in developing Southpaw since its inception, and Eminem has dedicated himself to ensuring that this film captured his passion for the project through his music,” Shady Records president Paul Rosenberg told Billboard. “We’ve assembled a great soundtrack to accompany what’s sure to be one of the finest boxing films ever.”
Eminem’s Shady Records will produce the upcoming Southpaw soundtrack, and the film also features former Shady/Aftermath artist 50 Cent in sizeable role. The album is scheduled for release in July.
