HBO Confirmation

Last week, HBO hosted the New York premiere of their highly anticipated film Confirmation, starring Kerry Washington, Wendell Pierce, and Greg Kinnear.

The Rick Famuyiwa-directed film revisits the controversial 1991 confirmation hearings of Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas (Wendell Pierce). Towards the end of the hearings, Anita Hill (Kerry Washington), a law professor who previously worked with Thomas at the EEOC and Department of Education, was contacted to discuss the personal and moral character of Clarence Thomas.

After much hesitation, Hill eventually revealed that Clarence Thomas had sexually harassed her via inappropriate comments during their time working together. Soon thereafter, the information leaked to the media, causing a firestorm around the confirmation process.

The 1991 hearings captivated an entire nation and sparked conversation around workplace equality, sexual harassment, and the treatment of women in society.

During Thursday’s New York premiere, hundreds of guests gathered at Manhattan’s Liberty Theater to watch an advanced screening of the thought-provoking film. After the screening, New York Times journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones hosted a panel with Kerry Washington, Wendell Pierce, and Rick Famuyiwa to discuss the historical impact of the confirmation hearings, Anita Hill’s bravery, and Washington D.C.’s questionable conduct during the proceedings.

Confirmation airs exclusively on HBO on Saturday, April 16 at 8:00 PM ET/PT. Confirmation will also be available on HBO NOW, HBO GO, and HBO On Demand.
