As plenty of fans pay tribute, Kendrick Lamar did the same by taking part in ESPN’s Kobe Bryant: Fade To Black video segment, narrated by Scoop Jackson. The tribute touches on what Bryant has meant to L.A. and the entire NBA community. A slew of his most storied career highlights are woven into a video of K.Dot at The Forum in Inglewood, where the Lakers played until 2000.
The Compton-bred MC pays homage to Bryant, who blessed his city with 5 rings over his 19-year career. The touching tribute is backed by “untitled 07,” more commonly known as “Levitate,” from Lamar’s loosie mixtape untitled unmastered.
As Lamar watches Bryant’s highlights, he slowly comes to the realization that the Black Mama is hanging it up for good.
“I’m talking about your blood, your sweat, your tears, even your DNA is placed in these L.A. concretes, man. Nothing will ever replace that or erase that. Forever great in our hearts. So, with that being said, it’s never goodbye, simply respect due,” Kendrick utters as the segment comes to a close.
Watch the bittersweet segment up top and be sure to watch Kobe touch the court at the Staples Center one last time Wednesday evening.
