DETROIT—The Metro Youth YMCA has announced nominations are now open for the thirty-sixth annual Achievers Awards, to be inducted during “Tux & Tens: 2016 Detroit Achiever Awards” on June 17, 2016 at the Detroit Historical Museum.

A branch of the Metro Detroit YMCA, the Metro Youth YMCA focuses on youth development and social responsibility. This year celebrates thirty-six years of the YMCA’s I Can Achieve- College Prep and Mentoring program that provides career and college prep services to high school and college students.

“We are excited to celebrate thirty-six years of relationship building and mentoring at our Tux & Tens gala,” says Terri Mial, Vice President of Youth Development for Metro Youth YMCA. “We have been able to impact the lives of our students through our Achievers programs and we are proud to recognize the achievements of our youth and volunteers at this event.”

Through I Can Achieve, a leadership program that prepares young people for the 21st century workplace, teens receive college preparatory skills and career opportunities. A key component of the program is the relationships the students develop with their mentors. This relationship provides the student with a positive vision for their future and a champion of their success.

The mentors are recognized and inducted into the Achievers Program at the annual celebration. Organizations have the opportunity to nominate an exceptional adult to be recognized as a Detroit Achiever. The Detroit Achiever will become part of YMCA’s influential volunteer core for the year and matched with a student.

“As an Achiever, I’ve had the opportunity to mentor a young man, who at one time was homeless. He interned at my agency during the summer and six weeks into internship, I hired him on full time. He’s no longer homeless and studying to become an insurance agent, “ said Eric Huffman, association board members, volunteer and former board chair for the Metro Youth YMCA. “His spirit and will to learn continues to motivate me and I’m grateful to have met this young man. I encourage organizations and business owners to support the I Can Achieve program and make a difference in a young person’s life. You will be surprise how they will affect your life too.”

The Detroit Achiever nominations are open for the 2016-2017 program year. The nomination form is online at http://www.ymcadetroit.org.

The generous support of the corporate community has made it possible for the I Can Achieve program to provide youth development services in Detroit.
