In a response to the current social and political climate the Michigan Chronicle and Radio One have joined forces to celebrate the best in our community with the inaugural Best in Black Detroit awards. Best in Black will celebrate local black-owned businesses, community organizations, entrepreneurs and entertainers in and around southeastern Michigan. The public DSkyline.jpg.jpgwill get the chance to nominate and vote on persons and organizations they believe are the best in an array of categories, which will culminate in an awards ceremony.

There is more to Detroit than meets the eye. For many people Detroit has long been known for its thriving automotive industry, Coney hotdogs and the Motown sound. However the city is in the midst of a creative boom that has ushered in a flourishing leisure and entertainment sector.

In 2015 Travel + Leisure magazine named Detroit one of the ‘50 Best Places to Travel in 2016.’ “In a few short years, Detroit has gone from being a cautionary tale to a success story,” writes Travel & Leisure digital travel editor Corinna Quinn. “Detroit might not be able to sell its comeback story for much longer — it’s decidedly back.”

Detroit is also a center of millennial entrepreneurship which has also aided in the rise of the city. Many know Detroit for big acts such as Eminem, Kid Rock, Big Sean and Dej Loaf. With the Motown Sound being a cultural staple, the genre offers a strong blueprint for many to hone and perfect their craft. Detroit is more frequently becoming the setting for national films and home to many local films, television and online personalities. Detroit is a melting pot of talent, and for this accomplishment it should be celebrated.

The Michigan Chronicle is accepting nominations for the best local artist, best producer, best local film, best restaurant and much more. Nominations close on Aug. 7, so be sure to visit http://www.Bestinblackdetroit.com and let your voice be heard. Once nominations have been finalized there will be a voting period and the winner will be announced live at an awards ceremony.
