On Wednesday, members of the Detroit Federation of Teachers ratified their new contract with the Detroit Public Schools Community District. The contract, while not perfect, includes pay increases, mostly in the form of bonuses (including a 3 percent bonus for instructors at the top of the salary scale); an added prep period for elementary school teachers; and the creation of a committee to address teachers’ health and safety concerns.
“This contract isn’t everything we wanted, but we are glad our members saw this ratification vote as a step forward for our union, our students and the future of Detroit’s public schools. Our members work extremely hard and deserve so much more than what is in this contract, and that is why we will continue to fight by using our collective voice, vote and power,” said DFT Interim President Ivy Bailey. “This contract provides some important improvements for our members, our students and their families, but there is still work that must be done to improve public education in the city of Detroit. And part of that work includes building on the community school language that has been agreed to by the district and the DFT.”
The DFT and its members will host a press conference tomorrow to lay out next steps in the fight forward to improve Detroit public schools and build for the future.
